Introduction - Initial Ideas

As the recession continues and global warming is a huge threat, we are taking the opportunity to use this as our initial idea, or starting point. Using the theme of “The Earth” and “Recycling”, our aim is to create a fun and new approach to dealing with our fears about the future of our world. Bringing everyone in the community together to enjoy nature and let them discover what the world has to offer.

Final Ideas and Design!

Thinking with a simple mind, we decided to use cardboard, as stated in the brief; we have to use up the vast amount of large cardboard sheets in our Pop Up Structure. The simplest and easiest shape was a box, we thought up the idea of using a large oversized cardboard box as our main structure. As we are displaying art and craft objects we decided the best way to combine a display aspect to the box was to use shelves and holes to hold the art. Instead of creating boring shelves, we wanted to create a weird and unique shelving system. Also I thought it would be an interesting and clever way to bring more nature into our structure by having a roof lawn or flower and plants on the roof. So here is my initial sketch of our idea.

We decided that we wanted the box to be quite big so it stands out and creates a interest. Our box will be 4m cubed, so it is big enough to hold things/people inside.

Here are some quick sketches of what all four sides will look like, using one of our first ideas about combining a tree into our Pop Up, I decided to combine a tree shaped shelving system to hold books/magazines etc. Also there will be rectangles cut out to create indented shelves and also shelves that obstrude out of the box too. Another idea i thought of was to include three draws into one side to store art or clothes. I also quickly drew up the measurements so that when i started to draw it up on sketch up i had a rough idea of the sizes i was working with.
Here are some perspective drawings that i did too, to capture the size and shape of the structure.

So after i had decided on the shapes of the shelves and structures i began to draw it up on sketch up.

The original dimensions i drew out didn't work whilst drawing it out in Sketch Up so here is an image of the new dimensions, they are hard to read because there are soo many, so if this structure were to be used, it is easy to get the dimensions from Sketch Up.
I then drew up the site we were going to place it in at the beginning, then i placed the box into it to see if it fit and looked good. I also experimented with which face to have facing the entrance.
This would look good placed this way so that the tree catches peoples eye and creates and interest and buzz.

This idea below would be the easiest way to acess the box and has the door way and sign facing the entrance to the foyer, this would let people know what the structure was and then people can acess all the sides and the entrance to inside easily.

I will continue to sketch and draw up the same structure whilst considering colour, materials and the interior furniture etc. Also I will photograph the Victoria Building Foyer (Our Chosen Site) and photoshop or collage the box into it, to create a realistic effect.
Also thinking back to our research into native american, aztek art, looking at totem poles and all the different colour and patterns we found, i thought it might be an exciting idea to get the art students involved in the structure. For example; get the illustration or fine art students to paint and draw murals relating to our theme, either on the actual structure or for exhibition peices too, and bring the craft side into it by getting the fashion, jewelry and ceramics students to create pieces to be displayed too.
