Introduction - Initial Ideas

As the recession continues and global warming is a huge threat, we are taking the opportunity to use this as our initial idea, or starting point. Using the theme of “The Earth” and “Recycling”, our aim is to create a fun and new approach to dealing with our fears about the future of our world. Bringing everyone in the community together to enjoy nature and let them discover what the world has to offer.

Final Ideas and Design!

Thinking with a simple mind, we decided to use cardboard, as stated in the brief; we have to use up the vast amount of large cardboard sheets in our Pop Up Structure. The simplest and easiest shape was a box, we thought up the idea of using a large oversized cardboard box as our main structure. As we are displaying art and craft objects we decided the best way to combine a display aspect to the box was to use shelves and holes to hold the art. Instead of creating boring shelves, we wanted to create a weird and unique shelving system. Also I thought it would be an interesting and clever way to bring more nature into our structure by having a roof lawn or flower and plants on the roof. So here is my initial sketch of our idea.

We decided that we wanted the box to be quite big so it stands out and creates a interest. Our box will be 4m cubed, so it is big enough to hold things/people inside.

Here are some quick sketches of what all four sides will look like, using one of our first ideas about combining a tree into our Pop Up, I decided to combine a tree shaped shelving system to hold books/magazines etc. Also there will be rectangles cut out to create indented shelves and also shelves that obstrude out of the box too. Another idea i thought of was to include three draws into one side to store art or clothes. I also quickly drew up the measurements so that when i started to draw it up on sketch up i had a rough idea of the sizes i was working with.
Here are some perspective drawings that i did too, to capture the size and shape of the structure.

So after i had decided on the shapes of the shelves and structures i began to draw it up on sketch up.

The original dimensions i drew out didn't work whilst drawing it out in Sketch Up so here is an image of the new dimensions, they are hard to read because there are soo many, so if this structure were to be used, it is easy to get the dimensions from Sketch Up.
I then drew up the site we were going to place it in at the beginning, then i placed the box into it to see if it fit and looked good. I also experimented with which face to have facing the entrance.
This would look good placed this way so that the tree catches peoples eye and creates and interest and buzz.

This idea below would be the easiest way to acess the box and has the door way and sign facing the entrance to the foyer, this would let people know what the structure was and then people can acess all the sides and the entrance to inside easily.

I will continue to sketch and draw up the same structure whilst considering colour, materials and the interior furniture etc. Also I will photograph the Victoria Building Foyer (Our Chosen Site) and photoshop or collage the box into it, to create a realistic effect.
Also thinking back to our research into native american, aztek art, looking at totem poles and all the different colour and patterns we found, i thought it might be an exciting idea to get the art students involved in the structure. For example; get the illustration or fine art students to paint and draw murals relating to our theme, either on the actual structure or for exhibition peices too, and bring the craft side into it by getting the fashion, jewelry and ceramics students to create pieces to be displayed too.

Product Concept

To keep the Pop up store simple, we should sell recycled jewellery designed by students at UCLAN; students or local artist could also run work shop sessions for locals to design their own jewellery too. This fulfils the brief; we are selling work and exhibiting a contemporary creative practice.
Below are images of recycled newspaper beads, which keeps within the theme of ReGeneration.

I thought that this would be a good concept for the structure.
Having them all connected makes the structure easy to move.
It also gives it diversity, giving you the option of having them straight or at an angle.

Promotional Ideas

The "Pop-up Promotional Cube"

Another idea that I thought of after doing a bit of research was the "Pop-Up advertising/promotional cube" Which is basically a cube which comes flat packed in an an envelope and when opened, literally pops out automatically and is covered in information regarding the product, or in our case, the Pop-Up ReGeneration shop. Basically these cubes could be sent out to all addresses of a certain location a week or so before the pop up shop is due to arrive to help start spreading the word.

The fact that is is a pop out cube I think would be a really effective way of promoting our store - due to the fact it is a play on the phrase "pop up shop" - also, they are made out of card, which can easily be recycled before/after manufacture.

"The pop up cube is probably the most popular of all the "big" pop-up marketing products because of its simplicity and generous print area.
The cube shaped product lends itself to so many creative marketing ideas that it fits lots of agendas. Used almost exclusively as a direct mail shot, the promotional pop-up cubes have turned up as the solution to many advertising campaign problems where the client has been looking for something different. There is also the option of a pop-up cube with added hole to the top so the cube can be used as a desk-top pen holder - meaning the printed on message will be seen on a daily basis and therefore stick in the customers mind."

The link below is for a short youtube clip that I think is definately worth a watch to get to grips with the general idea of this pop up advertising idea for the pop up shop. It has been originally used for nissan but can easily be changed according to any brand.

Structure and Colours

Weaved Willow Structure
In keeping with our inspiration from nature I have researched the possibility of using willow as part of our structure. It could possibly be combined with cardboard. It could form the main "frame" of the structure. One thing has to be taken into consideration though. It is living willow so will have to be planted in big pots. We could use terracotta ones as we already had the idea of using these in the shop to sell products in. As the pop up shop is temporary I don't see there being a problem with the willow being inside for short periods as long as it is watered everyday. It is pliable and  easy to work with. It can become quite a strong structure when it is weaved in and out of itself. It also looks very impressive when finished. As I mentioned before it could become the outer walls of the shop if we decided to have an enclosed space.

This tree is made up of entirely cardboard  and then covered in newspaper
Another possibility for the structure would be to use the cardboard which we have access to. We could make forms of trees which slot together and also in keeping with the Native American theme Totem Poles. These could be used to show the products which would be for sale. With maybe Dream catchers hanging from the tree branches and jewellery could be placed in the mouths of the totem poles. I think this would not work as an enclosed space so would be more open to the public passing by.
Another tree made out of cardboard but with more colour. This looks very effective. I like the use of the added birds and apples. It gives it more life

Colours

I really like the earthy tones which have been posted earlier on in the blog. I think they are really appropriate with our theme of nature. I also like the reds which Native Americans and other tribes use which they get from mixing crushed iron oxide with water. This never creates the exact same shade of red.The use of dyes which have come from nature would be I think a very important theme for our eco friendly shop

These colours are all made using dyes which have come from nature.
This red was made using madder
I like these paints which have been inspired by colours used by Native Americans
All kinds of natural resources can be used to produce dyes.

Here are a list of just a few

Beetroot
Flowers
Tree Bark
Fruit
Mud
Iron Oxide
Paprika
Insects and Beetles
Coffee Grinds
Sea Snails
Walnuts
Blood
Crushed Bone

Promotional Ideas

Chinese Sky Lanterns

I was thinking instead of the balloon releasing idea we should go with a more eco-friendly approach which will go well with the general feel of "ReGeneration" as balloons aren't biodegradable etc. For this I thought more along the lines of Sky lanterns / Chinese Lanterns which can be made from paper (recyclable- bonus) or material, with the same concept of having the promotional information attached to each lantern to advertise ReGeneration to whoever may stumble across it, and then repeat it via word of mouth and therefore create a snowball effect of spreading the information around friends/family/the community.
